Chelsea seek to scale Old Trafford fortress

Manchester United FC are unbeaten at home in all competitions this term but their quarter-final second-leg visitors Chelsea FC have plenty of experience of winning at Old Trafford.

Old Trafford is the setting for the conclusion of the all-English UEFA Champions League quarter-final between Manchester United FC and Chelsea FC.

• United are unbeaten at home in all competitions this season but Chelsea will not feel daunted by visiting a venue where they won on their last trip 12 months ago. They will need to repeat that feat having gone down to Wayne Rooney's 24th-minute goal in the first leg at Stamford Bridge.

• The clubs previously met in Europe in the 2008 UEFA Champions League final when United prevailed on penalties to claim their third continental crown after a 1-1 draw at Moscow's Luzhniki Stadium. It was a night when Blues captain John Terry spurned the chance to win the trophy for the first time for Chelsea, sending his spot kick against the post.

Previous meetings
• The head-to-head record between the clubs in all competitions is 68 wins for United, 44 for Chelsea and 47 draws.

• Their 2008 UEFA Champions League final meeting is classed as a draw. After Cristiano Ronaldo and Frank Lampard swapped first-half goals, Avram Grant's Chelsea ended with ten men following Didier Drogba's 116th-minute sending-off and United prevailed 6-5 in the shoot-out.

• The lineups on 21 May 2008 were:
Manchester United: Van der Sar, Brown (Anderson 120), Ferdinand, Vidić, Evra, Hargreaves, Scholes (Giggs 87), Carrick, Ronaldo, Tévez, Rooney (Nani 101).
Chelsea: Čech, Essien, Carvalho, Terry, Ashley Cole, Ballack, Makelele (Belletti 120), Lampard, Joe Cole (Anelka 99), Drogba, Malouda (Kalou 92).

• United's Carlos Tévez, Michael Carrick, Owen Hargreaves, Nani, Anderson and Ryan Giggs scored their penalties, as did Chelsea's Michael Ballack, Juliano Belletti, Lampard, Ashley Cole and Salomon Kalou. Ronaldo and Chelsea's Terry and Nicolas Anelka failed with their kicks, Edwin van der Sar's save from the latter securing United's triumph.

• The teams had met twice this season already before the first leg. United won 3-1 in the FA Community Shield at Wembley on 8 August, Antonio Valencia, Javier Hernández and Dimitar Berbatov scoring. Kalou replied for Chelsea.

• Chelsea came from behind to beat United 2-1 at Stamford Bridge in the Premier League on 1 March. Rooney put the visitors ahead but David Luiz's first Chelsea goal and Lampard's penalty turned the tables before United lost Nemanja Vidić to a 90th-minute red card.

• Chelsea won the clubs' last Old Trafford encounter 2-1 on 3 April last year. Joe Cole and Drogba put the visitors two up before a late reply by United's Federico Macheda. The result proved pivotal to the Premier League title race – Chelsea finishing a single point above United in the final standings.

• United's overall home record against Chelsea is 33 wins to 19 defeats with 24 draws.

• Of 11 meetings in Manchester since 2001, United have won five and Chelsea four with two draws.

• The first encounter between the clubs was an English second division fixture at United's former Bank Street home on Christmas Day 1905, which finished goalless. United were 4-2 victors in the first fixture between the sides at Old Trafford on 26 December 1912 – 24 hours after a 4-1 victory at Stamford Bridge.

Match background
• Chelsea are seeking a sixth UEFA Champions League semi-final appearance in eight seasons while United are bidding for a fourth in five years.

• Chelsea's quarter-final record in the competition is five wins and one defeat. United have won 11 and lost five at this stage, and went down on away goals to FC Bayern München 12 months ago.

• With their 2-0 victory at FC København in the round of 16, Chelsea have won three of four away games in this season's UEFA Champions League. United, 2-1 winners against Olympique de Marseille at Old Trafford in the last 16, have won two and drawn two at home.

• Chelsea have more experience of all-English encounters than United, having featured in six previous two-legged ties:
7-5 (aggregate): Liverpool FC, 2008/09 UEFA Champions League quarter-final
4-3 (aggregate): Liverpool FC, 2007/08 UEFA Champions League semi-final
1-1 (aggregate, lost 1-4 on penalties): Liverpool FC, 2006/07 UEFA Champions League semi-final
0-1 (aggregate): Liverpool FC, 2004/05 UEFA Champions League semi-final
3-2 (aggregate): Arsenal FC, 2003/04 UEFA Champions League quarter-final
2-0 (aggregate): Manchester City FC, 1970/71 UEFA Cup Winners' Cup semi-final

• Chelsea's overall record against English teams is P16 W6 D7 L3.

• United won both their previous all-English European two-legged ties. They beat holders Tottenham Hotspur FC in the first round of the 1963/64 UEFA Cup Winners' Cup, overturning a 2-0 first-leg loss with a 4-1 victory at Old Trafford.

• United also beat Arsenal home (1-0) and away (3-1) in the 2008/09 UEFA Champions League semi-finals.

• United have progressed in all 13 UEFA competition ties where they won the first game away from home, most recently against AC Milan in last season's round of 16 (3-2 away, 4-0 home). That includes only one 1-0 away win, at LOSC Lille Métropole in the 2006/07 round of 16, which preceded another 1-0 victory at Old Trafford.

• Chelsea, meanwhile, have lost the home first leg only once before in UEFA competition, going down 2-1 against FC Barcelona in the 2005/06 round of 16 and being eliminated after a 1-1 second-leg draw.

• Only twice in the UEFA Champions League era – FC Internazionale Milano's triumph at FC Bayern München in this season's round of 16 (0-1 home, 3-2 away) and the 1995/96 semi-finals, when AFC Ajax recovered from losing 1-0 at home to Panathinaikos FC with a 3-0 away triumph – has a team turned round a tie after a home first-leg defeat.

• United's record in shoot-outs in UEFA competition is:
6-5 v Chelsea FC, 2007/08 UEFA Champions League final
3-4 v FC Torpedo Moskva, 1992/93 UEFA Cup first round
4-5 v FC Fehérvár, 1984/85 UEFA Cup quarter-finals

• Chelsea's record is:
5-6 v Manchester United FC, 2007/08 UEFA Champions League final
1-4 v Liverpool FC, 2006/07 UEFA Champions League semi-finals

• The teams have contested three penalty shoot-outs after drawn matches in the FA Community Shield, the traditional curtain-raiser to the English campaign.
1997: United won 4-2
2007: United won 3-0
2009: Chelsea won 4-1

Team ties
• Chelsea manager Carlo Ancelotti has faced United three times in the UEFA Champions League. His Juventus team lost 4-3 on aggregate in the 1998/99 semi-finals but with Milan he recorded a 2-0 overall success in the last 16 in 2004/05, and a 5-3 aggregate semi-final victory in 2006/07. His record in those ties at Old Trafford was W1 D1 L1.

• Fernando Torres has scored in all three of his all-English UEFA Champions League ties, including two goals for Liverpool against his current employers. He struck against Arsenal and Chelsea in 2007/08 while his goal in Liverpool's 3-1 home first-leg loss to Chelsea in the 2008/09 quarter-finals was the last time he found the net in the competition.

• Paulo Ferreira helped FC Porto eliminate United in the round of 16 in 2003/04.

• Patrice Evra played in AS Monaco FC's 5-3 aggregate victory against Chelsea in the 2003/04 semi-finals.

• Evra and Ferreira were on opposite sides in the 2003/04 UEFA Champions League final, the latter's Porto running out 3-0 winners against Monaco.

• There are a host of current England internationals on both sides, including Terry, Cole and Lampard for Chelsea and Rio Ferdinand, Carrick and Rooney for United.

• Chelsea's Ramires and Alex are Brazil team-mates of Rafael and Anderson, while Florent Malouda and Evra play together for France.

• José Bosingwa and Nani represent Portugal at senior level while Branislav Ivanović and Vidić play together in Serbia's defence. Vidić lined up against Yuri Zhirkov in Russia's biggest derby during their days at FC Spartak Mosvka and PFC CSKA Moskva respectively.

• Ivanović was in the Serbia team that earned a 2-1 UEFA EURO 2012 qualifying win against Jonny Evans' Northern Ireland on 25 March.

• Bosingwa and Anderson were team-mates at Porto between 2005 and 2007 while Nicolas Anelka and Michael Owen played together at Liverpool in 2001/02.

• Lampard and United's Ferdinand and Carrick all started their careers at West Ham United FC.
