Grassroots football in October
Saturday 3 October 2009The start of the San Marino Under-11 and Under-13 national championships and the Costa Brava Cup in Spain are just some of the grassroots events scheduled in October as the Training Ground begins a new series of monthly previews.
San Marino events
There are 15 teams taking part in the autumn phase of the San Marino Under-11s championship, which started on 26 September and will run until the end of November, while the winter phase of the Under-13 league begins on 4 October and runs over nine weekends with Juvenes/Dogana 1 defending their title.
Scandinavian entry
In the middle of the month the focus switches to the Netherlands with nine to 17-year-olds involved in the Tur Holland competition in Heino on 12-13 October while from 12-15 October the Costa Brava Cup takes place in Blanes, Spain. Always popular with sides from Scandinavia over its five-year history, the 2009 entrants hail from Denmark, Sweden and Finland as well as Switzerland. The Simmeringer Herbstcup for 7-10 year old girls in Vienna and the SCS-Hallenturnier in Berlin end the month while October also heralds the start of the Children's Football School of Ljubljana in Slovenia.
Disabled events
It is also a big month of activities for those with disabilities. The Scottish FA's regional learning disability school league begins on 2 October, part of the national association's widespread efforts to promote football for the disadvantaged. Meanwhile, as a dress rehearsal for their hosting of the World Championship in 2011, the Netherlands holds the CPISRA seven-a-side international tournament for players with cerebral palsy from 20 October – 1 November.
