Madrid make most of Barça slip
Saturday 31 October 2009Gonzalo Higuaín scored twice as Real Madrid CF overcame the first-half dismissal of Raúl Albiol to defeat Getafe CF 2-0 and move to within a point of leaders FC Barcelona who surprisingly drew with CA Osasuna.
Higuaín double
The centre-back was shown a straight red on 28 minutes for bringing down former Madrid striker Roberto Soldado as he ran clear of the home defence. Despite being a man down, Madrid were able to take command early in the second half with a two-goal burst from Higuaín on 53 and 56 minutes to hand former Madrid defender Míchel a defeat on his return to the Santiago Bernabéu as Getafe coach.
Barça held
The victory ended Madrid's run of three games without a win in all competitions and closed the gap on leaders Barcelona to just one point after Josep Guardiola's side were held 1-1 at Osasuna. Barça looked to be on course for victory when Seydou Keita fired them ahead from close range with his fourth goal in two games. With the final kick of the match, however, Gerard Piqué turned Javier Camuñas's cross into his own net as the Spanish champions dropped points for just the second time this season. Sevilla FC, meanwhile, moved to within four points of the leaders thanks to goals from Álvaro Negredo (42) and Luis Fabiano (89) in a 2-0 win at Xerez CD. Elsewhere, Quique Sánchez Flores's first league game in charge of Club Atlético de Madrid ended in a 1-0 defeat at Athletic Club.
