Barcelona held
Barcelona had won all six of their league games prior to the international break but spent much of the first half at the Mestalla under pressure. The visitors pressed more convincingly after the interval but fifth-placed Valencia held on for a point.
Madrid win
As for Madrid, they were made to work hard for a 4-2 triumph against lowly Real Valladolid CF. Raúl González scored on 14 and 18 minutes and although Nauzet Alemán pulled one back, Marcelo made it 3-1 on the stroke of half-time. The visitors refused to wilt, however, and Marcos García Barreno reduced arrears early in the second period to bring the game back to life until Gonzalo Higuaín's fine chip eleven minutes from time.
Deportivo beat Sevilla
Sevilla FC are three points adrift of Madrid in third after losing 1-0 at RC Deportivo La Coruña. Juan Rodríguez's goal late in the first half moved Deportivo level with their beaten visitors on 15 points. The rest of the weekend programme will unfold on Sunday.
