The closest Ukraine venue city to joint-hosts Poland, Lviv is the major city in the west of the country with a population in the region of 725,000. A major cultural centre, it is renowned as a major seat of learning and is home to Lviv University, which dates from 1661, and the Lviv Polytechnic. It also boasts a philharmonic orchestra and The Lviv Theatre of Opera and Ballet. In addition, its historic centre was listed in 1998 as part of the World Heritage Centre by UNESCO. FC Karpaty Lviv are the major club in the city.
