AS Monaco 0-2 SV Werder Bremen
Sport Lisboa e Benfica Stadium, Lisbon

SV Werder Bremen became the first German club to lift the trophy for 15 years, but only 16,000 saw the final in the Sport Lisboa e Benfica stadium in Lisbon. Otto Rehhagel had built an effective unit. Uli Borowka and Rune Bratseth were the defensive pillars, Dieter Eilts played the anchor role in midfield while captain Miroslav Votava supplied front-runners Wynton Rufer and veteran Klaus Allofs, selected for the first time in six weeks to start the final.
Defending champions Manchester United FC were eliminated in the second round by Club Atlético de Madrid, who were in turn beaten by Club Brugge KV in the quarter-finals. Bremen knocked out the Belgians 2-1 on aggregate to secure their place in the final.

Midfield force drives Monaco
Arsène Wenger’s AS Monaco had, in Rui Barros, Marcel Dib, Emmanuel Petit and Gérald Passi a formidable midfield, while George Weah and Youssouf Fofana dispensed African skill up front. A solitary Rui Barros goal decided the quarter-final against AS Roma and in the semi-final, after a 1-1 home draw, they went 2-0 up against Feyenoord in Rotterdam, only for the Dutch to pull back to 2-2. The away-goals rule sent Monaco to Lisbon.

Bastia tragedy overshadows final
However, morale was badly affected by news of the Bastia tragedy on the eve of the final and, once behind, they lacked the heart to fight back. Bremen were content to let the French dominate possession and Allofs scored on the break after 41 minutes. When Rufer broke clear nine minutes after the interval to make it 2-0, the final was virtually over.
