1989/90: Vialli's extra-time flourish lifts Sampdoria
Friday 1 June 1990Sampdoria UC 2-0 RSC Anderlecht (aet)
Nya Ullevi Stadium, Gothenburg
Vujadin Boskov’s Sampdoria UC side made no mistake in its second consecutive final, with Gianluca Vialli emerging as the seven-goal hero of a solid campaign in which the Italian side won seven and drew two of its nine games. They overcame a stern challenge from Borussia Dortmund in the second round and, after hopping past Grasshopper-Club in the quarter-finals, comfortably defeated AS Monaco to book their passage to Gothenburg.
Impressive Anderlecht
Aad de Mos was in the final for the second time in three seasons, having moved from KV Mechelen to RSC Anderlecht and built an exciting side spearheaded by Marc Degryse, Luc Nilis and Marc Van der Linden, all of whom scored four times during the campaign. The second round brought a clash with defending champions FC Barcelona, whom they defeated 2-0 in Brussels and should have clinched the tie long before Van der Linden’s extra-time goal before 105,000 in the Camp Nou. They then cruised past FC Admira Wacker and CS Dinamo Bucuresti without conceding a goal.
Vialli makes the difference
Hopes of a classic final were unfounded. In Gothenburg, the two teams cancelled each other out and extra-time arrived with the final still locked in its original stalemate. But the next 30 minutes proved to be a personal triumph for Vialli. Just before the teams changed ends, he finally broke through the Belgian defences and put the final beyond their reach when he added a second two minutes after the re-start. Vialli was to return to the podium as player-coach of the 1998 champions, Chelsea FC.
