1977/78: Two out of three for Anderlecht
Thursday 1 June 1978FK Austria Wien 0-4 RSC Anderlechtois
Parc des Princes, Paris
During another spectacular campaign, RSC Anderlechtois scored 21 goals, conceded four and, in their third consecutive final, clinched the title with panache. FK Austria Wien were no match for the Belgians in the Parc des Princes.
Sweet revenge for Cup specialists
Anderlecht’s run to Paris included sweet revenge over Hamburger SV, their executioners in the 1977 final. After winning 2-1 in Germany, the Belgians fought out an anxious 1-1 draw in Brussels. In the quarter-finals, they beat an FC Porto side which, in the previous round, had beaten Manchester United FC 6-5 (2-5 at Old Trafford, 4-0 at home) and cruised past FC Twente in the semi-finals.
Tough work for Austrians
There was no cruising for FK Austria Wien. In eight matches en route to Paris, they scored seven goals and conceded six. One goal in three hours defeated Cardiff City AFC; 1-1 and the away-goals rule saw off TJ Lokomotiva Košice; two 1-1 draws and 3-0 in a penalty shoot-out overcame HNK Hajduk Split. The semi-final against Dinamo Moscow was settled by a nail-biting 5-4 in the penalty shoot-out after both legs had ended as 2-1 home wins.
One-sided final
Though Austria hoped that midfield maestro Herbert Prohaska would inspire them in the final, Anderlecht were too classy. Rob Rensenbrink and Arie Haan remained as the mainstays of Raymond Goethals’ side, while Frank Vercauteren was emerging as a midfield star. In a scintillating first half, Rob Rensenbrink scored after 13 and 44 minutes. Gilbert Van Binst, on the stroke of half-time and eight minutes before the end, completed a resounding 4-0 win.
