1973/74: Magdeburg clip Milan's wings
Saturday 1 June 19741. FC Magdeburg 2-0 AC Milan
Feijenoord Stadium, Rotterdam
AC Milan became the third club that failed to win a second consecutive final and thus contributed to a memorable year for the German Democratic Republic. 1. FC Magdeburg won the country's first continental trophy and, weeks later, the German Democratic Republic recorded a historic win over the Federal Republic of Germany in the FIFA World Cup.
Lethal strikeforce
Coached by Heinz Krügel, the team included two high-calibre strikers, Jürgen Sparwasser and Martin Hoffman. After eliminating Dutch, Czechoslovakian and Bulgarian opponents, they faced their sternest test in a semi-final against highly-rated Sporting Clube de Portugal and, after drawing 1-1 in Lisbon, they reached the final with a 2-1 win in their own Ernst Grube Stadium.
Past their prime
Milan were arguably past their prime, but were still hard to beat, especially when they had a lead to defend. The semi-final pitted them against Hennes Weisweiler’s VfL Borussia Mönchengladbach but goals by Albertino Bigon and Luciano Chiarugi gave them a 2-0 home win and they conceded only one goal in Germany.
Milan punished
Only 5,000 were in Rotterdam to see 1. FC Magdeburg make a shaky start in the final. But the breakthrough came five minutes before half-time when Enrico Lanzi scored an own goal. This forced the Italians to come out of their shell and allowed the East Germans to overrun them with a fast combination passing game. A second goal was inevitable and finally came after 74 minutes thanks to a splendid effort by midfielder Wolfgang Seguin. Milan simply didn’t have the resources to come back.
