1971/72: Glory for Rangers in Barcelona
Thursday 1 June 1972Rangers FC 3-2 FC Dinamo Moskva
Camp Nou, Barcelona
With Scottish internationals of the stature of defender John Greig, livewire winger Willie Johnston and predatory striker Colin Stein, Rangers FC were well-equipped to go one better than five years previously and, by overcoming Dinamo Moskva in Barcelona, lift the trophy.
Lisbon scare
After scraping past Stade Rennais FC, they had a second-round shock in Lisbon. After winning 3-2 in Glasgow, they were beaten 4-3 by Sporting Clube de Portugal, whereupon the referee – forgetting the away-goals rule – ordered a penalty shoot-out which was won by the Portuguese. UEFA upheld the Scottish side's appeal. Having beaten Torino Calcio in the quarter-finals, they exacted revenge for the 1967 final defeat by overcoming FC Bayern München 3-1 in the semi-final.
No answer
Dinamo progressed further than any other Soviet team and, after beating FK Crvena Zvezda in Belgrade, edged past Dynamo Berlin in a penalty shoot-out to reach the final. In Barcelona, they found no answer to Willie Johnston. After Colin Stein had given Rangers the lead after 23 minutes, he scored the second five minutes before half-time and a third four minutes after the break. But the Russians fought back bravely. Substitute Vladimir Eschtrekov scored on the hour and Alexander Makhovikov's second forced Rangers to survive three anxious final minutes.
Sour note
The worst, however, was still to come. Scottish fans invaded the pitch and did serious damage in the stands and in the city – to the extent that Rangers FC were barred from defending their title.
