Club Atlético de Madrid 1-5 Tottenham Hotspur FC
Feijenoord Stadium, Rotterdam

Tottenham Hotspur FC had dominated English football during the previous two seasons and, astutely coached by Bill Nicholson, the 'Spurs' gave England a long-awaited European breakthrough in swashbuckling style. Like Fiorentina AC a year earlier, Club Atlético de Madrid fell at the last hurdle in their title defence.

Changes in Madrid
The Madrid team had undergone changes. Sabino Barinaga had replaced José Villalonga on the bench and free-scoring Joaquín Peiró had left for Italy. They had to struggle mightily to overcome German side 1. FC Nürnberg 3-2 on aggregate in the semi-finals. The formidable Spurs' line-up included deadly striker Jimmy Greaves partnered by the bustling Bobby Smith, with Danny Blanchflower and John White (killed by lightning on a London golf course a year later) pulling the strings in midfield. They had scored 19 goals in six games en route to the Rotterdam final.

Spaniards dismantled
Thousands of English fans were in De Kuip to watch their side dismantle the Spaniards with sheer attacking power, despite the absence through injury of Scottish midfield dynamo Dave Mackay. Greaves and White put them two up at the break. Although Enrique Collar then gave Atlético brief hope with a spot-kick two minutes into the second, two goals from left-winger Terry Dyson and another by Greaves had the crowd singing the Tottenham anthem 'Glory, Glory Hallelujah, and the Spurs go marching on'.

The Welsh part-timers of Bangor City FC provided the romantic note, beating SSC Napoli 2-0 at home, losing 3-1 in Italy and, as the away-goal rule was not yet in place, losing a play-off in London 2-1.
