1961/62: Atlético break Fiorentina's grip
Friday 1 June 1962Club Atlético de Madrid 1-1 Fiorentina AC
Hampden Park, Glasgow
Replay: Club Atlético de Madrid 3-0 Fiorentina AC
Neckarstadion, Stuttgart
This was the first official Cup Winners' Cup played under UEFA's auspices and settled by a final – or rather, two – played in neutral venues. AFC Ajax and Olympiakos Piraeus FC were distinguished first-round casualties, eliminated by Ujpesti Dózsa SC and Dynamo Zilina respectively. Fiorentina AC, coached by the legendary Hungarian Nándor Hidegkuti, became the first of many defending champions to reach a second consecutive final – and lose it. Their opponents, Club Atlético de Madrid, were determined to engrave their name on a continental trophy and emerge from the shadow of their city rivals Real Madrid CF.
Replay required
A crowd of 30,000 was at Hampden Park in Glasgow to watch a 1-1 draw. Joaquín Peiró gave Atlético the lead after only 11 minutes, but Kurt Hamrin equalised 16 minutes later. Extra time failed to produce further goals, so the final had to be replayed.
Easier said than done
As both Italy and Spain had qualified for the 1962 World Cup finals in Chile and players from both clubs were required by their national teams. So the fans had to wait almost four months for the title to be decided in a replay staged, before a crowd of 40,000, at the Neckarstadion in Stuttgart.
Victory decided
Fiorentina's hopes of retaining their crown were dashed in half an hour. Miguel Jones gave Atlético the lead after eight minutes; Jorge Mendonça added a second after 27. Joaquín Peiró then rubbed salt into Italian wounds with a third goal close to the hour which guaranteed that another piece of European silverware would be heading for Madrid.
