Golden girl Mellgren calls it quits
Monday 16 January 2006Norwegian women's football has lost one its leading names to retirement after Dagny Mellgren decided to hang up her boots at the age of 27.
Staying at home
Instead of heading off to China to represent her country in the prestigious four-nation friendly tournament this week, Mellgren, a part-time nurse, will remain in her homeland. "If I was to continue playing I would have had to give it 100 per cent, something which wasn't possible at this time," said the Klepp IL forward.
Final goal
Quick and deadly around the penalty area, Mellgren scored the golden goal against the United States at the Olympic Games in 2000, which gave Norway the gold medal. She also managed five goals in seven qualifying games ahead of UEFA WOMEN'S EURO 2005™ and two in the final tournament, including Norway's goal in the 3-1 final defeat by Germany.
Boston switch
She departs the international arena with a scoring record of better than a goal every two games, since making her debut in the 1-0 win in the Algarve Cup against Finland in 1999. Mellgren, who enjoys playing golf and windsurfing, also spent two years in the United States with Boston Breakers.
